Team EVP's to be posted online soon!

EVP is short for "Electronic Voice Phenomenon". It's the process of capturing the voices and sounds of spirit life or paranormal activity on a recording device, such as a handheld digital encoder or a good old cassette recorder. Below are some examples of recording devices that are handy in the field.

Because spirit life exists on a slightly different frequency, or dimension, than does the rest of our three dimensional physical world, the voices of these spirits may be sometimes "missed" by the normal human ear. However, due to the sensitive nature of most recording devices, these other-worldly voices that would otherwise be missed are often times captured.

In fact, the other-worldly voices are sometimes so delicate that the very "room noise", or "white noise" in the room provides enough "physical matter" for the paranormal voice to be picked up in the atmosphere and recorded device. Remember, sound is heard only if it travels through physical particles, and since spirits do not have a physical body, you can help them out if there is a mild background noise, such as a soft fan or air conditioning vent, or anything that would provide a small bed of "white noise" to capture the vibration of the spirit's voice and amplify it. Often times, there is ambient room noise, such as a refrigerator humming, that serves this purpose.

Want to try your hand at capturing EVP's? Then try these easy steps:

1) Find an area that you feel is occupied by spiritual activity.

2) Get any portable recording device.

3) Ask a question into the room, such as "What is your name?" Give several seconds of silence after the question, to give your friendly ghosts a chance to answer onto the recording. Remember, you won't usually be able to hear the spirit answer back with the naked ear.

4) Take the recording into another environment and listen back to it. Listen carefully -- some EVP's are hard to make out! If you think you have an EVP, let a friend listen, and see if your friend is able to make out a voice as well.

5) If you have a computer program to analyze audio, such as Sound Forge or Wav Lab, that's a bonus, because once you upload your sound files, you can "see" the sound wave vary with the spirit voice after you've asked your question. Then you may digitally "amp up" the spirit voice by applying filters to get rid of unwanted background noise and conflicting frequencies.
